Exhibition Inquietação, Liberdade e Democracia opens in Madrid as part of the curatorial project developed for the Portuguese Capital of Culture

This collection, built from the collections of the Fundación Montemadrid and CACE – Coleção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado (Portugal), can be visited until March 8, 2026, at La Casa Encendida in Madrid.

The curatorial project by Paulo Mendes and Sandra Vieira Jürgens has parallels with the work developed for the exhibition Somos Todos Capitães – 50 anos em Liberdade (We Are All Captains – 50 Years of Freedom), which opened on April 26 this year in Braga. In this new exhibition, the curators summon the collective historical memory of Spain, Portugal, and Europe, at a time when the historical truth of facts and the basic principles of freedom are being questioned and distorted by populist discourses and new nationalist narratives that are proliferating across Europe and the world.

This exhibition-installation can be defined as a meta-narrative-exhibition project that works on the archive and the present, not just the history of two countries that won their freedom and will celebrate 50 years of democracy in 2025. It aims to celebrate the democratic transition in the Iberian Peninsula and address universal values of European civilization, human rights, democracy, pluralism, tolerance, and equality.

This exhibition, which arrives in Madrid today and is part of the official Spanish commemorations program, once again displays Fernando Sanchez Castillo’s piece that was part of the Somos Todos Capitães collection, presented as part of Braga 25. The artist pays tribute to one of the icons of the Portuguese Revolution, Celeste Caeiro, who became known for distributing carnations to the military in Chiado during the revolution.
