The musical and cultural legacy of the bells in Braga is indelible. But their role doesn’t have to remain consigned to the annals of history: these instruments can be integrated into today’s music, influencing contemporary composition.
From this premise, University of Minho researcher Elisa Lessa launches a reflection on the region’s sound heritage, in which those responsible for Novos Ecos de uma Paisagem Sonora also take part. The programme, which is part of the Braga 25 Portuguese Capital of Culture, proposes a new way of looking at bells, at a crossroads for which two other icons of the local soundscape are also invited: the viola braguesa and the cavaquinho.
