In the same way that European integration has blurred national borders, this project aims to blur the boundaries between two municipalities, between artistic genres, and between art and nature.

Extremo combines sonic experiments and music, testing sound boundaries in the natural environment between Braga and Guimarães. The project will take place in a peculiar geography: the Sacromontes (sacred hills), a group of sanctuaries and promontories located on the border between Braga and Guimarães. Here, we will critically explore the contribution of this landscape to the cultural definition of the region, while analysing the relationship between territory, sound, and art.

The festival will take the form of a day trip, resembling a short pilgrimage, with a programme of sound walks, as well as sound sessions and active listening on the paths between the Sacromontes. The baroque church of Santa Maria Madalena, located in Falperra, on the exact boundary between the two municipalities – interestingly, part of the building belongs to Braga and the other to Guimarães – will be the epicentre of the artistic programme, with electronic and electroacoustic performances. The entire programme promotes the concept of slow tourism, inviting European visitors to discover this territory and awakening the local public to its green heritage.
