Originating in the 17th century, a period when the Iberian Peninsula was at the centre of European political power, the Iberian Pipe Organ influenced the musical composition of the time and served as a model for instrument builders in much of Europe.

However, after its heyday in the Baroque period, the instrument became undervalued and little studied. The Pipe Poetics project aims to promote the creation and live performance of new compositions for Braga’s Iberian Pipe Organs, bringing together the vanguard of musical creation and this unique heritage of the city. We have invited three contemporary composers from different backgrounds to bring new musical approaches to this fascinating instrument. Every four months in 2025, a new musical composition will be developed over a two-week period and presented in one of Braga’s churches, in an exciting encounter between the city’s heritage and the artistic avant-garde. Each of the artist residencies will be recorded and presented in an online documentary in 2025.
