What establishes neighbourliness today? What form does neighbourhood take in Braga?

Workshops – Atlas of the Shape of the Neighbourhood

Do you live in the neighbourhoods of Fujacal, Fontainhas, Quinta da Capela, Makro, or Parretas? Do you grow your vegetables in the urban gardens of Quinta da Armada, Lameiras, and S. Vicente?  Then these workshops are for you.

Throughout 2024, we’ll be holding several collective workshops with neighbours, architects and local agents with the aim of creating an Atlas that discusses and identifies the marks, memories, objects, people and species of these places in the city.

Registration

If you live in or are related to one of these urbanisations or urban gardens, sign up here. The workshops are free and open to all residents over the age of 12. The meeting place will be given to each participant when they register.

The Shape of the Neighbourhood project, developed within the framework of Braga 25, focuses on the interconnection between two themes related to the urban history of the city of Braga. On the one hand, the study and characterisation of the form of the medium and high-density housing developments built around the historic centre from the 1980s onwards. On the other hand, the deconstruction and expansion of the concept of neighbourhood, which has changed drastically over the last few decades. Nowadays, the notion of neighbourhood is not just limited to cohabited spaces in buildings, streets or neighbourhoods, but also includes other dimensions, such as virtual space and more-than-human forms of life.

Over the course of two years, the Shape of the Neighbourhood project aims to be an expedition of research and creation in the squares of 5 urbanisations – Fujacal, Fontainhas, Quinta da Capela, Parretas and Makro – and in the gardens of 3 urban gardens – Quinta da Armada, Lameiras and S. Vicente – that have been built in Braga over the last few decades.

The aim is to get to know, debate, map and activate the multiple forms of neighbourliness in the public space of these areas of the city through a committed, collaborative and horizontal process between architects, artists, human and more-than-human neighbours.
