The City Executive and the Municipal Assembly of Braga unanimously approved a motion in support of the candidacy on the 12th and 30th of September 2022, respectively, uniting in the same project the views of all political parties with seats in the aforementioned local structures.
The municipalities of CIM Cávado and Quadrilátero Urbano, which from the first moment, supported Braga’s bid, have deepened their relationship with the project. The cities of Amares, Barcelos, Esposende, Guimarães, Terras de Bouro, Vila Nova de Famalicão and Vila Verde have assumed a greater involvement in the application, namely through investment associated with the cultural programme’s projects in which they are partners.
The North Regional Council, a consultative body of the CCDR-N that includes the 86 mayors of the North Region and about two dozen social, economic, environmental and scientific organizations in the region, approved, on 30 May 2022, a motion in support of Braga’s candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2027, thus reinforcing the commitment of the entire Northern Region of Portugal to hosting this initiative.
Porto and the North of Portugal Official Tourism Board supports Braga’s candidacy in this final stage, since the city became the only candidate city from the region. A partnership protocol covers different areas, such as the dissemination and promotion of the destination to European and international audiences.
At the Eurorregional level, we gathered the support of the Regional Government of Galicia, reinforced by a letter signed by its President, Alfonso Rueda, stressing the values of trust and fraternity that unite the two peoples and pointing the project as a crucial moment at the cross-border level, since, in 2027, Santiago de Compostela will be celebrating a Jacobean Year. The supra-municipal entity Eixo Atlântico do Noroeste Peninsular also approved a motion in support of the candidacy, further narrowing the distances between the territories of the Peninsular Northwest from both sides of the border.
Braga’27 is not walking alone in this final stage of the candidacy process for the European Capital of Culture 2027, having strong local, regional and Eurorregional support that aims to amplify ties and professional collaborations between the cultural agents of Braga and those from the North of Portugal and Galicia. The aforementioned institutional support reinforces the technical and artistic work carried out so far.
