In 2024, the 50th anniversary of 25 April will be celebrated and Mão Morta will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of their foundation. Although they may seem like two unrelated events, without 25 April Mão Morta would probably never have existed.
At a time when the danger of the return of fascism was palpable throughout the world, Mão Morta couldn’t help but speak out and denounce the air of the times. Viva la Muerte! is about this upsurge in anti-democratic forces and their thuggish behaviour, which uses democracy to applaud fascism, making clear the dangers we run and the dangers democracy faces.
