Braga’27 was present at Placemaking Week Europe 2022

Placemaking Week Europe is an annual event, which takes place every year in a European city, and which brings together architects, urban planners, researchers, economists, politicians, urban developers, associations, and community groups of various nationalities.

During 4 days, presentations, visits, itineraries, workshops, and debates are held with intervention in the public space and ongoing projects.

This year it took place in Pontevedra, which over 35 years has developed an urban model of Walking City, prioritizing the transformation of public space for the use of pedestrians, improving the safety, well-being, health, and quality of life of its citizens.

The Santa Clara Convent was the scene of various activities and discussions with international experts, students, and members of the local community about the intervention and programme that it should host, while several city squares received urban facilities that provided a dynamic of celebration and sharing.

Ramon Marrades, director of Placemaking Europe 2022, following the partnership with our bid and other bids for common projects, invited Braga’27 to participate in the event. Braga’27 was represented by Tiago Azevedo, Coordinator of the European and International Cooperation of the project.

“Placemaking Europe Week Pontevedra introduced me to an international, diverse, and experienced community that shares a need for cultural programming and intervention in public spaces as the most democratic cultural infrastructure in the city. The data presented and collected from projects carried out around the world sustain the success of placemaking as the creation of living places, not just spaces.” – Tiago Azevedo, Braga’27 Coordinator of the European and International Cooperation.

Braga was also invited by Hans Krassemberg, founder of STIPO (NL) and member of the Strategic Council of Placemaking Europe for the launch and integration dinner in the program “Cities in Placemaking”, a two-year scale-up, joining cities such as The Hague (NL), Helsingborg (SE), Helsinki (FI) and Pontevedra (SP) for sharing knowledge, good practices, data and results, and ways of managing participation and building public space integrated into European municipal policies.

“Braga’s potential and need was recognized by the various international participants and hosts as a case study of great transnational interest, for the development of a new generation of intervention and urban planning confident that together we will be able to open the doors to a city made with everyone and for everyone.” – Tiago Azevedo, Braga’27 Coordinator of the European and International Cooperation.
