Braga em Risco is back for its 9th edition

The 9th edition of Braga em Risco will take place from 15 to 28 March 2025 at the Tibães Monastery. This year, the initiative takes on a new lease of life as part of Braga’s official programme as the Portuguese Capital of Culture, reinforcing its identity as a meeting point for artists, illustrators and the community.

With a rich and diverse programme, the event aims to transform the Tibães Monastery into a living ecosystem of colour and imagination. Over the course of two weeks, more than a hundred activities will be organised, including exhibitions, risk workshops, art markets, masterclasses, story times and shows. The event aims to be a real family event, offering enriching experiences for all ages.

Among the highlights of this edition is the group exhibition ‘Braga 22×22 – Bracara Natura’, curated by Pedro Seromenho and Marta Madureira. This exhibition invites the public to embark on an illustrated journey through the municipality’s 22 green spaces, which have been sponsored by 22 illustrators, reinforcing the relationship between art and natural heritage. This year’s exhibition also highlights the work of young illustrators from the MIA/IPCA, in a clear commitment to renewing the national art scene.

This year’s edition will also feature the largest participation ever of foreign illustrators, bringing together a total of 14 artists from different parts of the world, reinforcing its growing internationalisation. With the presence of a record number of award-winning illustrators from different nationalities, the event has established itself as one of the most important in the sector at a global level, projecting Braga as a centre of reference in the field of illustration and the visual arts.

One of the great novelties of this edition is the “Autocarro do Risco”, which will connect the city centre to the Tibães Monastery, ensuring easier access to the event. This bus will be entirely illustrated, transforming itself into a moving work of art through the streets of Braga. During the journeys, passengers will be transported to a universe of stories and creativity, with the presence of storytellers who will bring to life narratives inspired by the imagery of Braga em Risco. We can also highlight the “Ruas do Risco” initiative, which will bring illustration to the city’s streets.

These initiatives, realised in partnership with TUB/AEBraga, reinforce the fusion between art, mobility and community participation, providing an immersive experience even before arriving at the event. In addition, inclusion will continue to be one of Braga em Risco’s priorities, with exhibitions accessible to people who are blind or have low vision, through Braille synopses and wood relief illustrations.

Braga em Risco is organised by the Municipality of Braga, produced by Leituras Encantadas and curated by Pedro Seromenho.
