At least since the 16th century, Braga has devoutly celebrated the Passion of Christ, with the iconic processions of the Steps and the Lord Ecce Homo, joined more recently by the Burial of the Lord and the Burrinha Procession.
However, the events associated with Holy Week are rooted in the community beyond these religious moments, and are marked by a series of cultural and religious initiatives that prepare the Catholic faithful for Easter. The streets are dyed purple, the scent of incense fills the air and the temples become epicentres of community life, renewing ancestral practices.
We are preparing a year-long celebration of national artistic creation, in connection with Europe and with the artists and cultural agents from Braga.
