Conversation between Marta Pinto Machado and Camila Maissune

Artist Marta Pinto Machado presents the audiovisual rehearsal Ceci n’est pas Francisco, developed during her artistic residency as part of the Contra-Quiosque project, curated by Space Transcribers and part of the artistic programme of Braga 25 – Portuguese Capital of Culture.

The rehearsal is based on the discovery of a photograph of Francisco Mendonça – a black footballer who lived in Braga in the 1960s – found in the Braga District Archive. The work proposes a speculative and poetic reconstruction of his time in the city, confronting official narratives and exposing institutional silences around racial and political issues.

After the screening, there will be a conversation between the artist and curator and researcher Camila Maissune, centred on topics such as archives, historiography and the potential of art in producing counter-narratives.
