Mara Milosnica is the protagonist of a short story by Ivo Andric, the Bosnian writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961. Mara is also a key character in the play As Vivas, by Aïcha Euzet, performed by Júlio Cerdeira.
Her unfortunate story echoes the horrors suffered in the 1990s by Muslim women who were imprisoned by soldiers from the Serbian armed forces in ‘rape houses’. Adila, the protagonist, mirrors Mara’s life: she is subjected to the most horrific torture and time dilates as she imagines the River Milijacka filling up, overflowing and flooding Sarajevo.
