In 2025, Braga will be the Portuguese Capital of Culture. We are preparing a year-long celebration of national artistic creation, in connection with Europe and with the artists and cultural agents from Braga
The Portuguese Capital of Culture is an initiative stemming from the bid process for the title of European Capital of Culture 2027 (ECOC 2027). In Braga, we initiated our efforts in 2018, outlining a cultural strategy for the 2020-2030 decade, which is currently in the implementation phase.
Subsequently, in 2020, we progressed to the application process for ECOC 2027. Two intense years of work followed, during which we envisioned Braga in 2027 in collaboration with artists, cultural institutions, organizations, businesses, and anonymous citizens. Braga, alongside Aveiro, Évora, and Ponta Delgada, made it to the list of finalist cities for this initiative. The international panel of experts evaluating the process selected the city of Évora as the European Capital of Culture 2027.
The high quality of work carried out by all finalist cities led the Ministry of Culture to create a similar national initiative, the Portuguese Capital of Culture. The first three cities to be awarded this title are thus the non-winning finalists: Aveiro in 2024, Braga in 2025, and Ponta Delgada in 2026.
